THE SUMMER OF 1864

By 1864, guerrilla attacks on steamboat traffic were so prevalent that captains had iron plates placed around the pilothouses to guard against gunfire. Union soldiers were detailed to ride the boats to prevent their capture. The river port of Rocheport became the headquarters of the notorious guerrilla “Bloody” Bill Anderson in the late summer. Steamboat captains risked grounding to avoid the hail of bullets from there when they passed. Instead of mooring on the riverbank at night, captains took to tying up in the middle of the river. A new threat emerged when General Sterling Price led an army of twelve thousand men into Missouri in September 1864.
